Rachel Otuoma, the widow of former Kenyan footballer Ezekiel Otuoma, has responded strongly to public backlash after revealing she has found love again, just months after burying her late husband.
Widow Speaks Out After Online Criticism
During a TikTok Live session with content creator Nyako, Rachel addressed growing criticism about her upcoming introduction ceremony with her new partner, Jabilo.
The backlash emerged after Rachel, who had emotionally vowed eternal love to her late husband at his January 2025 burial, appeared to move on with another man.
“I did everything required of me as a widow. I completed all traditional mourning rites,” Rachel clarified in the live broadcast. She emphasized that widows deserve happiness too and should not be forced to live in grief forever.
“If the roles were reversed, I know Ezekiel might have moved on even faster,” she said.
Rachel also added that Jabilo, her new partner, has returned from abroad and is currently living with her.
Public Reaction and Double Standards
While some Kenyans have supported her decision, others have criticized what they see as a “premature” move. However, Rachel insists she owes no one an explanation and that society’s double standards are what truly need to be examined.
She challenged critics by pointing out that men are rarely judged for remarrying or dating shortly after their spouse’s passing.
Mourning, Culture, and the Right to Heal
In many African cultures, mourning rituals for widows are strict and often restrict personal freedom, sometimes lasting a year or more.
Organizations like Widow Rights International advocate for widows’ autonomy and freedom to remarry, highlighting the emotional and social pressures they often face.
