Gilgil, Nakuru County
At least five people, including a male infant, perished on Monday evening in a devastating road crash involving three vehicles at Mbaruk area in Gilgil, along the busy Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.
According to Nakuru County Traffic Enforcement Officer Allan Ogolla, the 6 PM accident involved a Toyota Fielder, a saloon car, and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer.
What Happened in the Mbaruk Crash?
Police said the driver of the Toyota Fielder was overtaking a fleet of vehicles when he failed to rejoin his lane in time, leading to a head-on collision with an oncoming saloon car.
Moments after the impact, the Fielder swerved and rammed into the trailer, causing a massive explosion. The vehicle, which was traveling from Nakuru to Nairobi, caught fire and was reduced to a shell.
“The impact was severe. All five occupants of the Fielder, including an infant, two female adults, and two male adults, died instantly,” said Officer Ogolla.
Fire and Traffic Snarl-Up
The crash caused a significant traffic snarl-up on both sides of the highway as police moved in to control the situation and tow the wreckages.
“We have moved the bodies to the mortuary for autopsy and identification. Investigations into the crash are ongoing,” police confirmed.
The wreckage of the burnt car and the two other involved vehicles were later towed to the local Gilgil Police Station.
