Kenyan international Clarke Sydney Omondi Oduor has found himself in the headlines after his club Grimsby Town was fined Ksh 3.5 million (£20,000) for fielding him as an ineligible player during their stunning Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United.
The English Football League (EFL) confirmed on Tuesday that Grimsby breached competition rules when Oduor’s registration paperwork was submitted one minute past the deadline ahead of the Round Two clash on August 27, 2025.
Despite the administrative error, Oduor played as the Mariners shocked United in a 12–11 penalty shootout win at Blundell Park, sealing a spot in Round Three.
According to the EFL statement, Grimsby filed Oduor’s documents at 12:01 pm, just missing the 12:00 pm cutoff. While the club quickly self-reported the breach, the technicality meant the Kenyan midfielder was ineligible to feature in the match.
Grimsby Accepts Sanction
Grimsby Town has accepted the punishment but maintained that the error was an honest administrative oversight. Club officials expressed relief that the victory will still stand despite the fine.
The incident has, however, thrust Oduor into the spotlight, with many Kenyan fans rallying behind him on social media, praising his performance and contribution to the historic win.
What Next for Oduor and Grimsby?
Oduor, who joined Grimsby earlier this year, has been a crucial addition to the squad and remains eligible for upcoming fixtures, including the Carabao Cup Round Three.
For Kenyan football, his appearance against Manchester United – regardless of the fine – remains a source of pride, with fans celebrating his role in one of Grimsby’s biggest nights in recent history.
