Nairobi, Kenya – September 2, 2025, 03:21 p.m: Political tension in Nairobi is rising sharply as the Kenya Kwanza Alliance and the Azimio la Umoja coalition hold separate meetings with Members of County Assembly (MCAs). Both camps aim to sway the impeachment motion against Governor Johnson Sakaja and his deputy, James Muchiri.
Raila Chairs ODM Meeting at JOOF
ODM MCAs confirmed that Raila Odinga summoned them to a morning meeting at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF). The invitation message stated:
“Good morning, Hon. Members. You are hereby invited by the Party Leader, H.E. Raila Amollo Odinga, to a consultative meeting at the JOOF today, September 2, 2025, starting at 10 a.m.”
Although the agenda was not disclosed, several MCAs said they believed the impeachment motion would dominate the discussion.
“It’s true, we have been invited to JOOF. We don’t know what will come out of it, but I guess they want us to drop this impeachment motion, which is members-driven,” said Mountain View MCA Maurice Ochieng, in a statement quoted by the Daily Nation.
Ruto Calls UDA MCAs to State House
At the same time, UDA members confirmed that President William Ruto invited them to a midday meeting at State House.
“Greetings everyone. We will be meeting our party leader tentatively at 12:30 p.m. today at State House. Kindly plan accordingly. We will give you further details,” read a message circulated to Kenya Kwanza members.
This back-to-back mobilization shows how seriously both coalitions are treating the Nairobi power battle.
Impeachment Motion Gains Momentum
By Monday evening, 87 MCAs had already signed in support of the motion to remove Sakaja. They now seek 100 signatures to cement their case.
Supporters of the ouster accuse the governor of failing to curb corruption, delaying payments to contractors, and blocking Ward Development Funds (WDF). In addition, they argue that Sakaja’s office directly facilitates shady dealings at City Hall.
Raila and Sakaja Met Behind Closed Doors
The showdown follows a closed-door meeting held yesterday between Raila Odinga, Governor Sakaja, and Assembly leaders. No official details emerged, since attendees declined to share the outcome.
Even so, MCAs pushing for the motion insist that Sakaja has failed to deliver on his promises. His allies, however, continue to argue that he deserves more time to implement his development agenda.
Nairobi Awaits a Decisive Week
The coming days could determine Nairobi’s political direction. If the impeachment motion moves forward, the city may plunge into a drawn-out legal and political fight that reshapes leadership at City Hall.
