Court Orders Arrest of Habanos Lounge Owner Over Noise Pollution

A court has ordered the arrest of Habanos Lounge owner Maurice Asira for continuously disregarding noise pollution directives issued by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

In April 2025, NEMA directed the closure of the popular entertainment spot after a series of complaints from residents about uncontrolled noise levels. However, the club defied the order and remained operational.

Again in May 2025, a second closure directive was issued, but Habanos Lounge continued running in blatant disregard of environmental regulations.

The legal battle escalated after residents living near the facility accused the lounge of persistently blasting music above permissible limits, despite a restraining order issued on October 17, 2024.

The court has now ruled that Asira must appear in person to explain why he should not face jail time or a fine for being in contempt of court.

This case highlights the ongoing struggle between entertainment joints in Nairobi and authorities over noise pollution regulations. NEMA has in recent years intensified crackdowns on clubs and lounges operating within residential neighborhoods, citing public health and environmental concerns.
