Standard Group journalist Collins Kweyu has been arrested and detained at Nairobi’s Central Police Station after sending an inquiry text message to a High Court judge.
According to Kweyu, the message was part of his journalistic work to verify claims made by a complainant about the judge.
“After I listened to the claims, the complainant who had the contact of the judge gave it to me. I sent a text asking if the claims were true. The judge even responded, saying he is a saved man and doesn’t do what I had asked. I was shocked to be arrested and framed,” Kweyu said.
Judge Reports Matter to Police
The High Court judge reportedly took offence at the message and filed a complaint at Kehancha Police Station in Migori County. Following this, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Migori arrested Kweyu in Nairobi.
Police said the case is being investigated under cyber harassment and identity theft, contrary to Sections 27 and 29 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018.
Investigations and Court Order
DCI officers moved to court and obtained a warrant to search Kweyu’s documents and mobile phones, along with those belonging to his co-accused, Benson Lengolenyang alias Ben Limo and Martin Njoroge.
Kweyu insists his intentions were purely professional, saying he only wanted a balanced story by seeking the judge’s response.
