A multi-agency security team has intercepted a consignment of methamphetamine valued at approximately KSh10.5 million at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The operation was conducted on Wednesday by officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit at a cargo facility within the airport after authorities identified a suspicious parcel destined for the Philippines.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the shipment had been declared as containing handmade bags and clothes.
However, a detailed inspection reportedly uncovered white crystalline substances hidden inside two handbags and wrapped in clear packaging material.
Preliminary tests conducted by investigators confirmed the substance was methamphetamine weighing approximately 1,320 grammes.
Police estimated the street value of the drugs at KSh10.56 million.
“The parcel was subjected to a thorough physical examination, during which officers uncovered white crystal substances carefully concealed inside two handbags,” the DCI said in a statement.
Authorities have since seized the consignment as evidence while investigations continue to identify and trace those behind the attempted shipment.
The DCI stated that the interception forms part of ongoing intelligence-led operations targeting international narcotics trafficking networks using Kenya as a transit route.
Investigators further noted that traffickers continue to rely on concealment methods and false cargo declarations in attempts to evade detection, especially in international cargo shipments.
Security agencies have recently intensified surveillance and screening at airports, border points and other strategic transit hubs in efforts to curb drug smuggling operations.
