Kericho County, Kenya – October 5, 2025 – Parents of students at Litein Boys High School have been directed to pay a combined Sh69 million to cover damages following a violent student strike that left parts of the school in ruins.

Each parent will now be required to pay Sh49,699 to facilitate the reconstruction process, according to a report by the Parents Association (PA).

Sh69 Million Damage Bill Breakdown

The figure was arrived at after a joint assessment by the Parents Association, the Board of Management (BOM), regional engineers, and teachers. The initial bill of quantities (BQ) stood at Sh63,338,665, but an additional Sh6 million in unaccounted expenses brought the total to Sh69,038,665.

The breakdown included:

  • BQ: Sh41,929,610
  • Suppliers and teachers’ compensation: Sh27,281,785
  • Consumables: Sh367,400

The total cost was later revised to Sh69,578,795 after the team agreed to exclude painting expenses since the buildings’ paintwork remained intact.

Parents Question Board’s Priorities

Despite agreeing to contribute to repairs, parents have accused the school’s board of focusing solely on collecting fines instead of addressing the root causes of the unrest.

“Our PA resolution to the board was declined. The causes of the strike were not discussed, and the board appears more interested in our payment than in the welfare of our children,” read part of the parents’ statement.

The strike, which caused extensive property destruction, has reignited debate on how schools handle discipline, accountability, and infrastructure restoration following student unrest.
