The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has reported a low voter registration turnout, with only 20,754 new voters signed up in the second week of the ongoing countrywide voter registration exercise.
This figure falls significantly short of the weekly target of 196,000, as the commission aims to register 6.3 million new voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Gen Z Missing from Voter Registration
Despite heavy social media campaigns and nationwide awareness drives, Generation Z continues to stay away from registration centers for the second week in a row.
The IEBC had hoped for a surge in youth participation, especially from first-time voters, but officials say turnout among the youth remains worryingly low.
Commission Calls for Urgent Mobilization
IEBC officials have urged political leaders, civil society groups, and youth organizations to help mobilize young Kenyans to register before the deadline.
The commission reiterated that voter registration is crucial for ensuring youth voices are represented in the 2027 elections.
