Nairobi, Kenya – Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed that security officers attached to Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya have been withdrawn. The decision comes amid concerns about the potential misuse of firearms by officers ahead of Thursday’s by-elections.
Speaking to the media, CS Murkomen clarified that Governor Natembeya is not the only politician affected. He stated that security personnel assigned to several leaders from both sides of the political divide have been withdrawn as a precaution.
“The National Police Service has a report that the officers attached to some politicians are involved in criminal activities. Some have chosen to keep quiet, but others have gone public,” Murkomen said.
CS Murkomen emphasized that the withdrawal is aimed at preventing any misuse of firearms under the guise of protecting political leaders. He urged all politicians to respect the electoral process, stating,
“There is no boss tomorrow. The people are the bosses, and they are going to elect their leaders. Anyone attempting to interfere with elections will be treated like any other suspect.”
The CS assured the public that security officers will still be present at polling stations to safeguard voters and ensure that no intimidation occurs. This move comes in the lead-up to the Trans Nzoia by-elections, where heightened security is crucial for maintaining peace and order.
Governor George Natembeya had previously raised concerns over his withdrawn security detail, which followed an armed ambush targeting him in Chwele Ward, Kabuchai, Bungoma County. The Interior Ministry maintains that the measure is a preventive step to secure elections rather than a politically motivated action.
