Prominent Kenyan industrialist Nareshchandra Malde, the founder of Pwani Oil Products Limited, has passed away at the age of 74.
Pwani Oil confirmed his death on Saturday, October 25, 2025, in Mombasa, surrounded by family. The company described Malde as “a visionary leader whose principles and leadership helped shape one of Kenya’s most successful homegrown brands.”
From a Small Mill to a Manufacturing Giant
Malde co-founded Pwani Oil in 1981 with his brothers Ramesh Kanji Malde and the late Anil Hansha. What began as a small coconut oil mill on Kenya’s coast grew into one of East Africa’s most trusted consumer goods companies, producing cooking oils, soaps, and detergents under popular brands such as Fresh Fri, Sawa, and Detrex.
Headquartered in Jomvu, Mombasa, Pwani Oil has become a household name across Kenya and beyond — a testament to Malde’s business acumen, innovation, and commitment to quality.
“He was a man driven by integrity, innovation, and a deep love for Kenya,” read part of the company’s tribute.
A Legacy Beyond Business
Beyond entrepreneurship, Malde was widely admired for his philanthropy. He supported initiatives in education, healthcare, and community empowerment across the coastal region, earning respect as both an industrialist and humanitarian.
Former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala led tributes, describing Malde as “a visionary entrepreneur whose integrity and hard work made Pwani Oil a source of pride for the region.”
“His contribution to Kenya’s industrial growth and social welfare will never be forgotten,” Balala said.
