Uber has agreed to acquire German food delivery company Delivery Hero in a deal valued at $14.8 billion (approximately KSh1.9 trillion), a move set to create the world’s largest food delivery group outside China.
The acquisition will significantly expand Uber’s global footprint, increasing its food delivery operations from 50 countries to 99, including markets served by Delivery Hero through brands such as Glovo.
Global expansion
The combined businesses recorded a pro-forma gross merchandise value (GMV) of $236 billion (approximately KSh30.5 trillion) in 2025, underscoring the scale of the merged operation.
The acquisition is expected to strengthen Uber’s position in key international markets as competition in the online food delivery sector continues to intensify.
Asset sale to address competition concerns
To address potential regulatory and competition issues, Delivery Hero has agreed to sell its operations in 14 markets to U.S.-based investment firm SSW Partners for approximately €1.4 billion (about KSh207 billion).
The divestment is intended to facilitate regulatory approval for the broader acquisition.
Deal awaits regulatory approval
The transaction has received the backing of Delivery Hero’s management and supervisory board and is expected to close during the second half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.
Uber, which is already Delivery Hero’s largest shareholder, has made the offer conditional upon acquiring at least 50 per cent plus one share of the company.
If completed, the acquisition will create one of the world’s largest technology-driven food delivery platforms, significantly expanding Uber’s international reach and strengthening its presence across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and parts of Asia.
