Two senior Vodacom Group executives have joined the Safaricom PLC board as non-executive directors, replacing two directors who have resigned.
Mariam Cassim, Vodacom Group’s Chief Executive Officer for Fintech, and Matimba Mbungela, the group’s Chief Officer for Human Resources, were appointed to the Safaricom board on August 13, 2026, subject to regulatory approval.
Their appointments follow the resignation of James Ludlow and Dr. (Eng.) John Kipngetich Mosonik as non-executive directors, also effective August 13.
Cassim Brings Fintech and Corporate Finance Experience
Safaricom said Cassim brings extensive experience in corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, deal structuring, debt structuring, commercial management and executive leadership.
She has held senior positions at Vodacom since 2017 and currently oversees the group’s fintech business.
Her appointment comes as Safaricom continues to expand its financial technology operations, particularly through its M-Pesa business.
Mbungela Joins Safaricom Board
Mbungela has served as Vodacom Group’s Chief Officer for Human Resources since 2014.
He previously held senior human resources positions at both Vodacom and Vodafone Group and brings extensive experience in people management and corporate leadership.
Mbungela also serves as a non-executive director on the boards of Vodacom Tanzania, Vodacom Mozambique and Vodacom Lesotho.
Changes Strengthen Vodacom Representation
The appointments increase the representation of Vodacom Group executives on the Safaricom board as the two companies continue their close strategic relationship.
The appointments will take effect subject to the necessary regulatory approvals, following the departure of Ludlow and Mosonik from the board.
