A 71-year-old Catholic priest attached to the Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Karen, Nairobi, has been found dead inside his room at the Apostles of Jesus Major Seminary.

Father Alex Kalemba Motahingwa, a Rwandan national, was discovered on Wednesday, August 12, after he failed to turn up for the morning meal with fellow priests.

Concerned colleagues reportedly went looking for him and found his body inside Room 30 at the seminary.

Police Suspect Suicide

Preliminary police findings indicate that Father Kalemba is suspected to have died by suicide.

Detectives reportedly recovered a handwritten note containing contact details of people the priest wished to be notified following his death. His passport was also found inside the room.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.

Priest Celebrated Mass a Day Before His Death

Father Kalemba had reportedly celebrated Mass at both the Apostles of Jesus Major Seminary and the Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Tuesday, one day before he was found dead.

His body was moved to Montezuma Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the priest’s death.
