Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has hit back at President William Ruto over his recent attacks on former President Uhuru Kenyatta, telling the Head of State to take responsibility for the challenges facing his administration.
Speaking during a political tour of Nakuru on Friday, Gachagua dismissed Ruto’s claims that Uhuru was behind the opposition’s growing political activities, arguing that the President’s problems were a result of his own decisions.
Gachagua: ‘Your Problem Is You’
Gachagua urged Ruto to stop blaming Uhuru and instead focus on the political opponents he will face in the 2027 General Election.
“Kasongo amekwama, ameenda Eldoret, analilia watu wao waseme tutam. Anawaambia shida yake ni Uhuru Kenyatta. Kasongo, achana na Uhuru Kenyatta. Uhuru alikuachia nchi iko na imani. Baada ya miaka nne, umeleta goons, ukasuspend rule of law na kuleta wakora kutawala Kenya,” Gachagua alleged.
He insisted that Uhuru would not be Ruto’s opponent in the next election, positioning himself as the President’s main political challenger.
“Shida yako ni wewe, umejiletea wewe mwenyewe. Uhuru hashindani na wewe, hatakuwa kwa debe. Yule mpinzani wako ni Gachagua, ndiye utapambana na yeye.”
Gachagua Vows to Remove Ruto From Power
The former Deputy President predicted a major opposition victory in 2027, saying Kenyans would use the election to reject Ruto’s administration.
“Mimi nitapambana na wewe. Nimekukimbiza, wewe unalia kama panya ameshikwa na mtego. Kazi ya Mlima nimemaliza, sasa nimeingia Narok. Nimekufukuza Narok,” Gachagua stated.
He further claimed that his political silence in the past had been deliberate and warned Ruto that the person he had pushed out of government could ultimately defeat him at the ballot.
“Ulikuwa unanifukuza, hunijui vizuri. Nilikuwa nanyamaza, najifanya mjinga. Huyu ulifukuza ndiye atakuja kukutoa katika kiti cha urais.”
Ruto Accuses Uhuru of Sponsoring Opposition
Gachagua’s remarks came a day after Ruto accused Uhuru of financing the Opposition in an attempt to undermine his administration.
Speaking in Eldoret on Thursday, Ruto alleged that Uhuru had failed to deliver key programmes during his presidency, including affordable housing and universal healthcare, and was now supporting political forces seeking to remove him from office.
“Mkipima wale watu, ule sponsor wao, alishindwa na maneno ya Affordable Housing? Alishindwa na mambo ya Universal Health Coverage? Alishindwa na maneno ya kusomesha watoto wetu?” Ruto posed.
The President also accused the Opposition of relying on slogans such as “one term” and “must go” without presenting Kenyans with a clear alternative agenda.
The exchange signals an increasingly heated political contest as rival camps intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
