Safaricom has quietly reduced the amount of data offered in several of its most popular bundles — including the widely used no-expiry options — effectively doubling the cost per megabyte for millions of customers.
The changes, which took users by surprise over the weekend, were not officially announced. Many subscribers only noticed when their purchased bundles delivered significantly less data than before.
A bundle worth KSh51, which previously offered 255MB, now provides only 102MB.
The KSh100 package has dropped from 400MB to 200MB, while the KSh250 bundle has been cut from 1GB to 500MB.
The sudden reductions have sparked widespread backlash online, with Kenyans expressing concern over shrinking value at a time when inflation and high living costs are already straining household budgets. Many noted that although prices remain unchanged, their practical “internet purchasing power” has been cut in half.
Safaricom has not yet issued an official statement confirming whether the bundle adjustments are permanent or part of a system change.
