A fresh police report has revealed new details surrounding the tragic road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, indicating that the veteran politician was driving towards Nairobi when the fatal collision occurred.
According to an official report filed at the Naivasha Traffic Base, the crash happened at around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. Jirongo was driving his white Mercedes Benz E350 when the vehicle was involved in a devastating head-on collision with an oncoming Climax Coach bus.
Police say preliminary investigations suggest that lane deviation was the primary cause of the accident. Officers noted that Jirongo, who was heading inbound to Nairobi from Nakuru, failed to keep to his proper lane, resulting in the deadly impact.
“It happened that one Cyrus Jirongo, aged 64 years, was driving a Mercedes Benz from Nakuru direction towards Nairobi. Upon reaching the accident scene, he failed to keep to his inner lane and collided head-on with the oncoming motor vehicle,” the police report states.
Both vehicles were badly damaged, with Jirongo’s luxury sedan sustaining catastrophic frontal damage. Images from the scene show the car’s engine compartment completely crushed, with debris scattered across the highway.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after the crash, but Jirongo was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe head injuries.
Passengers aboard the Climax Coach bus escaped with minor injuries and shock, with no fatalities reported among the occupants.
Jirongo’s body was moved to a local mortuary in Naivasha as family members and close associates gathered, with plans underway to transfer the body to Nairobi for further arrangements.
The former MP’s death has sparked an outpouring of tributes nationwide, with leaders and Kenyans remembering him as a key political figure who played a major role in shaping Kenya’s multiparty democracy.
