Homa Bay, Kenya – January 7, 2026 (EAT) — Police in Homa Bay County have launched investigations after unknown criminals carried out a night-time break-in at Mbita Sub-County Police Headquarters, escaping with computers from two key government offices. The breach has raised serious security concerns.
The incident targeted the offices of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), both located within Mbita Police Station.
How the Break-In Happened
According to a police report, the robbery occurred at an undetermined hour during the night, despite the compound being guarded around the clock by armed officers.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects used a claw bar to force entry into the DCI offices and stole one desktop computer. They then broke into the neighboring ODPP offices, taking two desktop computers and a CPU processing unit.
A senior police officer in Mbita confirmed the breach and said detectives were working to determine how the suspects accessed the secured premises undetected.
“This is a serious security breach, and we are treating it with the urgency it deserves. All angles are being explored, including the possibility of internal lapses,” the officer said.
Staff Shock and Security Concerns
Staff discovered the break-in when they arrived at work in the morning. Many expressed alarm over the potential compromise of sensitive information stored in the stolen computers.
“Our concern goes beyond the loss of equipment. Some of the data in those computers is sensitive and could compromise ongoing investigations and prosecutions,” said one officer from the affected offices, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Internal Investigations Underway
As part of the investigation, four police officers on duty at the time have been placed under interrogation. Authorities say the move aims to establish whether negligence or collusion played a role in the operation.
Police have pledged to release further updates as the investigation progresses.
