Nairobi — Suna East Member of Parliament and National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has issued a legal warning to Standard Media Group, accusing the publisher of running defamatory stories that he says have gravely damaged his reputation and standing in public life.
Through his lawyers, Junet served the media house with a demand letter dated Tuesday, January 6, giving it seven days to retract the disputed articles, issue a public apology, and provide written assurances that similar publications will not be repeated.
Disputed Articles Appeared on Front Page
The dispute arises from a series of reports published in The Standard’s January 6 edition, which Junet claims falsely and maliciously portrayed him in a negative light. The articles appeared prominently on the front page, as well as on pages 6, 7 and 8, and were authored by different journalists.
According to the legal notice, the publications described Junet as a “traitor”, a label his lawyers argue is reckless, scandalous, and deliberately intended to harm his political reputation.
Claims of Malice and Character Assassination
Junet’s legal team says the language used in the articles implied that the MP is dishonest, politically disloyal, and morally compromised, suggesting he serves unnamed interests rather than the electorate.
The lawyers argue that such portrayals were crafted to expose Junet to public ridicule, hatred, and contempt, and were published with clear malice.
They further note that Junet holds a senior constitutional office as the Minority Leader in the National Assembly, and that branding a sitting parliamentary leader a traitor without factual or legal basis goes beyond fair political commentary.
“Such characterisation amounts to outright character assassination,” the letter states.
Additional Articles Challenged
Beyond the front-page story, Junet also took issue with a separate article on page 6, which allegedly depicted him as a shadowy political broker who operates covertly before disappearing from the public scene.
His lawyers have dismissed the claims as entirely fabricated, unsupported by evidence, and published with reckless disregard for the truth.
Another article on page 8 reportedly portrayed Junet as an absentee and negligent legislator, further compounding what his legal team describes as a coordinated and malicious attack on his character.
Demand for Retraction and Apology
The demand letter argues that the decision to splash the allegations across multiple pages demonstrates deliberate sensationalism, aggravated recklessness, and a blatant breach of both journalistic ethics and legal standards.
Junet says the publications have caused him significant reputational damage and personal distress, an impact worsened by the newspaper’s wide national circulation.
As remedy, his lawyers are demanding:
- An immediate and unequivocal retraction of all offending articles
- A full public apology, published with equal prominence in print and across all digital platforms
- A written undertaking that no further defamatory references will be made
Legal Action Looms
The letter warns that failure to comply within the seven-day window will trigger immediate legal action against Standard Group Limited, including claims for general, aggravated, and exemplary damages, injunctive relief, and recovery of legal costs.
