Kenyans turned out in large numbers at Tule Kienyeji Restaurant in Nakuru after its owner went online to appeal for help following persistently low sales.
In a video shared on social media, the restaurant owner, identified as Akinyi, broke down in tears as she narrated the struggles of running the eatery despite investing her life savings into the business. She revealed that she often spent long hours at the restaurant without serving a single customer, leaving her overwhelmed by mounting debts, rent pressures and fear of losing everything she had worked for.
The emotional clip quickly went viral, touching many Kenyans who mobilised to support her business. Another widely shared TikTok video showed the distraught businesswoman, also identified as Harriet, lamenting how days would pass without customers despite her heavy investment in the hotel.
Moved by her plight, crowds began streaming into Tule Kienyeji Restaurant, with some patrons travelling from as far as Nairobi after seeing the video online. The visit was coordinated in part by businesswoman May Jerono, who helped marshal the growing number of supporters.
Those unable to make the journey opted to assist in other ways, sending money via mobile transfers to help the restaurateur settle bills and keep the business running.
For the woman at the centre of the viral story, the overwhelming show of solidarity restored her hope and dignity. Still emotional as customers filled the restaurant, she expressed gratitude to Kenyans for standing with her in her moment of distress.
“I am overwhelmed. I did not think the video was going to blow up this much. It was just an honest cry for help. Thank you so much, Kenyans,” she said.
