Murang’a pastor James Irungu, the man attempting to break Kenya’s longest tree-hugging record, collapsed after spending 79 hours and 40 minutes hugging a tree during his ambitious 80-hour marathon challenge aimed at raising cancer awareness.
Witnesses at the venue in Murang’a Town rushed to his aid moments after he collapsed, before he was taken for medical attention. Authorities later confirmed that Pastor Irungu is in stable condition.
Tree-Hugging Challenge Draws National Attention
The unusual endurance challenge attracted widespread attention across the country, with thousands of Kenyans following live updates on social media as the hours counted down.
Irungu’s mission involved continuously hugging a tree without breaks, a physically demanding feat that tested his stamina and health.
Huge Crowd Turns Up in Murang’a
Earlier in the challenge, a large crowd gathered at the site where the 30-year-old pastor was carrying out the awareness campaign. Supporters cheered, sang, and danced as they stood in solidarity with him.
The atmosphere turned celebratory when Irungu surpassed the 72-hour tree-hugging mark previously set by tree-planting ambassador Truphena Muthoni in neighbouring Nyeri County.
Breaking Records for a Cause
The crowd erupted in celebration as Irungu crossed the milestone, with many hailing him for his determination and resilience.
Muthoni was earlier recognised for a 48-hour tree-hugging marathon, while her 72-hour attempt is still undergoing ratification by Guinness World Records.
Irungu launched his challenge on Sunday and was scheduled to complete it on Thursday at 5:27am, just minutes after the 80-hour mark.
Support From Leaders and Influencers
Throughout the marathon, social media personalities, local leaders, and artists visited the site to motivate the pastor. Muthoni herself also made an appearance to show support.
Artistes entertained the crowd with music as Irungu continued the challenge, turning the event into a powerful blend of advocacy, endurance, and community mobilisation.
Raising Cancer Awareness
The pastor has maintained that the challenge was never just about breaking records but about honouring cancer patients and survivors, while drawing attention to the need for early screening, treatment, and support.
