The Council of Governors (CoG) has publicly named four Senators it accuses of intimidating and attempting to extort Governors appearing before the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC).
In a statement issued after a meeting on Wednesday, the CoG singled out CPAC Chairperson Moses Kajwang, Vice-Chairperson Johnes Mwaruma, Edwin Sifuna and Samson Cherargei, alleging that they have been “notorious” for misconduct during oversight sessions.
According to the governors, the four lawmakers have been linked to claims of extortion, political witch-hunts, intimidation and harassment targeting county chiefs summoned to respond to audit queries before the committee.
The Council said the named Senators have been “consistently cited” in complaints raised by Governors regarding the conduct and tone of CPAC proceedings.
The move marks an escalation in tensions between county governments and the Senate, which is constitutionally mandated to exercise oversight over devolved units. The CoG has previously warned that some oversight sessions have allegedly strayed from accountability into what it terms as personal attacks and undue pressure on Governors.
The Senators named in the statement are yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
