Arsenal’s Set-Piece Power Against Chelsea Fires Them Clear in Title Race

Arsenal tightened their grip at the top of the Premier League after edging Chelsea 2-1 in a tense London derby — with yet another clinical display from their deadly set-piece routines.

The league leaders were not at their fluent best in open play, but their growing reputation as the division’s most dangerous team from corners once again proved decisive, delivering two expertly worked goals that pushed them five points clear in the title race.

Corner-kick specialists strike again

Arsenal’s breakthrough came through defender William Saliba, who reacted quickest to nod home after an initial flick from Gabriel during a well-rehearsed corner routine.

The second goal followed a familiar script. Midfielder Declan Rice curled in a precise delivery that was met powerfully by Jurrien Timber, who headed in his third league goal of the season to seal a crucial victory.

The win highlighted a remarkable trend: Arsenal have now scored 16 goals from corners this season, the highest in the league and a figure that equals the all-time Premier League record for a single campaign. Only Oldham (1992-93), West Brom (2016-17), and Arsenal themselves in 2023-24 have previously reached that mark.

Set-piece coach Nicolas Jover has been widely credited with transforming Arsenal into one of Europe’s most efficient teams in dead-ball situations — a tactical edge that has become central to their title push.

Title charge gathering momentum

The victory keeps Arsenal firmly ahead of Manchester City, although they have played one game more than the reigning champions.

Beyond the league, the North London side are enjoying a standout season across competitions. They maintain a perfect record in the UEFA Champions League group stage, have reached the Carabao Cup final, and remain in contention in the FA Cup.

A hallmark of champions?

While Arsenal’s flowing attacking football often draws headlines, it is their efficiency from set-pieces that is increasingly defining their campaign. In tight matches like the win over Chelsea, those meticulously drilled routines are proving to be the difference — turning marginal games into vital victories.

With the season entering its decisive phase, Arsenal’s dominance from dead balls may yet prove one of the most important weapons in their pursuit of a long-awaited Premier League title.
