The young Kenyan popularly known online as “Chama”, who went viral during the June 25, 2024 anti-government protests for his now-famous “Mr Speaker Sir” moment outside Parliament, has resurfaced after spending nearly two years in hiding.

Babu Owino Confirms Return

Babu Owino confirmed Chama’s return on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, and announced that he would personally serve as the young man’s legal advocate.

The lawmaker stated that any legal matters or police inquiries involving Chama should be directed through his office.

Says He Hid Over Safety Concerns

Speaking publicly after resurfacing, Chama revealed that he had remained away from the public eye for one year and nine months due to fears for his safety.

According to him, he received threats following the highly publicized demonstrations that took place during the nationwide protests in 2024.

“He Was Unarmed” — Babu Owino

Babu Owino defended the youth, insisting that Chama had participated peacefully during the demonstrations.

The MP stated that during the protests, the young man carried only:

  • A mobile phone
  • A Kenyan flag
  • A bottle of water

He emphasized that Chama was unarmed throughout the protests.

Viral Symbol of 2024 Protests

Chama became one of the most recognizable faces of the June 2024 demonstrations after videos of him addressing Parliament using the phrase “Mr Speaker Sir” spread widely across social media.

The protests, largely driven by Gen Z activists and young Kenyans, became a defining political moment in the country and sparked widespread national debate about governance, accountability and youth activism.
