Health Ministry Says Isolation Measures Target Kenyan Citizens, Not Foreign Nationals
The Ministry of Health has confirmed that 37 Kenyans who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are currently under quarantine as part of enhanced Ebola surveillance measures aimed at protecting the country from a possible outbreak.
Speaking during a national television interview, Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga said the individuals are all Kenyan citizens and include business executives, logistics personnel, and workers who frequently travel within the region.
Government Dismisses Social Media Claims
Dr. Oluga strongly dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that Kenya’s quarantine and isolation facilities were established to host foreign nationals.
According to the PS, the current surveillance programme is focused on safeguarding Kenyans and preventing any potential importation of Ebola cases from countries experiencing outbreaks.
“The individuals currently under observation are Kenyan citizens returning from areas considered high-risk. The measures are purely precautionary and part of our national disease surveillance strategy,” he explained.
Enhanced Ebola Preparedness Measures
The Ministry of Health says it has significantly strengthened the country’s preparedness systems amid heightened concern over Ebola outbreaks in parts of the region.
Among the measures already implemented are intensive screening procedures at airports, border points, and other entry routes into the country.
Authorities have also expanded the capacity of designated isolation and treatment facilities while increasing surveillance activities in counties considered vulnerable to cross-border disease transmission.
Over 2,200 Health Workers Trained
Dr. Oluga revealed that more than 2,200 healthcare workers have already undergone specialized training on Ebola preparedness, detection, and response.
The training covers case identification, patient management, infection prevention, contact tracing, and emergency response procedures.
Health officials say the investment is intended to ensure Kenya remains ready to respond quickly should any suspected case be detected.
Public Urged to Remain Vigilant
The Ministry has urged travelers arriving from affected regions to cooperate fully with health screening procedures and immediately report any symptoms associated with Ebola.
Officials emphasized that there are currently no confirmed Ebola cases in Kenya but stressed that continued vigilance remains critical given ongoing outbreaks in neighboring countries.
Authorities maintain that the quarantine measures are standard public health interventions designed to protect both travelers and the wider population from potential disease transmission.
The government has assured Kenyans that surveillance, screening, and preparedness efforts will continue across the country as part of a broader strategy to maintain public health security.
