Nuru Okanga, an opposition activist, is one of the 1.43 million candidates taking the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam.
Okanga, who spoke to the press after sitting for his first paper at Mumias Muslim Primary School on October 30, 2023, shared his motivation for pursuing this academic endeavour.
He explained that his reason for sitting the KCPE exams is to obtain the necessary certificate to run for the position of Member of County Assembly (MCA) in the 2027 elections.
He expressed his determination and gratitude for being in good health and having the opportunity to attend school, even at this stage in his life. The 32-year-old decided to return to complete his Standard Eight education, which he had initially missed due to personal circumstances.
“Mimi nimeamua kufanya Standard Eight ili nikue na certificate kwa sababu 2027 niko kwa kura na baba yangu alikufa mapema sikueza kusoma,” he stated. (I have decided to complete Standard Eight to obtain a certificate because I will be on the ballot in 2027, and my father passed away early, so I couldn’t study.)
Okanga also expressed his gratitude to Roots Party Leader George Wajackoyah for providing him with a well-trained tutor in preparation for the exams. He acknowledged that his educational journey was vital to achieving his political ambitions.
During anti-government demonstrations organized by the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition, Okanga gained political prominence by making strong criticisms of President William Ruto and his administration.
When asked about his expectations for the national exams, Okanga mentioned that he aims to score 250 marks out of 500.
He revealed his intentions to continue his education by progressing to secondary school and, ultimately, university. This goal is motivated by the requirement in Kenya that presidential candidates must have a degree.
“I will not stop at this level (KCPE). I want to progress to secondary school and ensure I join university because in Kenya for one to be president, you must have a degree. That is where my focus is. Even if I am 70 years, I must contest for the presidency,” he explained.
