The Director General of the Communications Authority (CA) of Kenya, Ezra Chiloba, has officially resigned. The CA released a statement announcing that Chiloba submitted his resignation to Mary Mungai, who serves as the chairperson of the CA board, on October 18, 2023.
Confirming Chiloba’s departure, Mungai extended her well wishes for his future endeavors. She also expressed gratitude for his contributions to the organization, acknowledging his significant role within the CA and the broader Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.
“On behalf of the authority, I extend my best wishes to the departing Director General for success in his future endeavors and express our deep appreciation for his invaluable contributions to the organization and the wider ICT sector,” Mungai stated.
This is after the Ethics and Anti-Commission said they are investigating allegations of abuse of office and conflict of interest against Chiloba during the financial years 2021/2022 to 2023/2024.
Chiloba was suspended over alleged abuse of the authority’s mortgage scheme.
A report of a ninth special Board Audit and Risk Assurance Committee (Barac) meeting held on August 8, 2023, indicates that Chiloba alongside nine others “fundamentally breached their obligations arising under the contract of service”.
Following his sudden suspension, Christopher Wambua was appointed to sit in an acting capacity pending the determination of Chilonba’s suspension.
“Following a meeting of the Authority’s Board held on 18th September 2023, resulting in the suspension of the Director General, I am pleased to inform all staff of the appointment of Mr. Christopher Wambua as Director General in acting capacity effective today until further notice,” Wambua said in an internal letter to staff.
