A 21-year-old Rongo University student has lost his life in a violent dispute over settling a bill incurred at a local bar. Abel Chumba, affectionately known as Kiddo among his peers, was a third-year student at the university.
The unfortunate event took place on a Thursday morning when an altercation in one of the college hostels turned fatal, resulting in Abel’s stabbing death. Local authorities have initiated an investigation into this distressing incident.
Rongo sub-county police commander, Peter Okiringi, confirmed that they currently have a suspect in custody related to the fatal stabbing of the student. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The suspect was reportedly a friend and fellow student of the victim. The altercation that escalated into violence occurred after they had both been at a local club, and it was triggered by a dispute over who was responsible for settling their bill at the establishment.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the suspect used a kitchen knife to stab Abel before fleeing the location. Subsequently, the assailant sought refuge in one of the hostels, where he informed fellow students about the incident.
Abel was rushed to a nearby clinic and later transferred to Tabaka Mission Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The university’s dean of students, B. Asuga, released a memo to announce the sad news, stating, “We regret to announce the passing of Abel Chumba, which occurred on November 1, 2023, while undergoing emergency medical attention at Tabaka Mission Hospital.
” He also mentioned that Abel was a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Communication and Journalism in the School of Information, Communication, and Media Studies.
