A Kenyan woman was apprehended at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport over suspicions of smuggling cocaine valued at Ksh.281 million (₹14.90 crore).
According to Indian authorities, the woman was intercepted her upon arrival aboard a Kenya Airways flight number KQ 204 from Nairobi to Mumbai on December 28.
According to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), law enforcement officers confiscated approximately 1,490 grams of a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine.
The drugs were ingeniously concealed within a hair conditioner bottle and a body wash bottle.
“The ingenious concealment of the drugs involved two black polythene packets cleverly placed within a hair conditioner bottle and a body wash bottle,” stated a spokesperson from the DRI.
The woman, apprehended under the strict regulations of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985, was taken into custody and subsequently placed in judicial custody. The NDPS Act serves as a comprehensive legal framework in India aimed at addressing crimes associated with narcotics and psychotropic substances.
This is not the first time Kenyans have been arrested attempting to smuggle drugs into India in ingenious ways.
Another Kenyan woman was arrested at the Indian airport six months ago with cocaine concealed inside whiskey bottles. Earlier in the year, another Kenyan had also been arrested by Indian authorities ferrying heroine worth Ksh 127 million.
Apart from drugs, Kenyans have also been arrested attempting to smuggle in gold in Indian airports with one using a sick child as a conduit, while the other had the gold stashed in her innerwear.
