As the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) gains momentum, Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions are gearing up to recreate the triumph of 1984, the last time the tournament was held in the Ivory Coast.

With the goal of adding to their five titles, Cameroon approaches this year’s edition with a determination to improve upon their recent modest AFCON record, securing just one championship in the last ten editions.

Coach Rigobert Song’s squad, however, faces a significant challenge with the absence of star goalkeeper André Onana, who has prioritized his commitment with Manchester United over Tottenham Hotspur.

This setback became evident in their final warm-up game, a 1-1 draw against Zambia. Nevertheless, their recent form has been robust, with only two losses in their last nine competitive matches (W4, D3).

Historically, Cameroon has exhibited a penchant for strong starts in the AFCON, experiencing only two defeats in their opening fixtures since 1998.

Their opponents, Guinea’s National Elephants, enter the tournament with their own ambitions and a formidable track record.

Despite the disappointment of losing the hosting rights for the 2025 AFCON, Guinea has consistently demonstrated its mettle, reaching the knockout stages in six of the last seven editions they participated in.

The team’s recent 2-0 victory over Nigeria in a friendly match adds to their confidence, having won three of their last five outings (D1, L1).

This clash with Cameroon presents an intriguing storyline, as Guinea has managed to secure victories in their last two encounters against the Indomitable Lions, despite winning only two of their last dozen meetings (D5, L5).

This suggests a potential edge for the Guineans in what promises to be a closely contested battle.

The key matchup to watch will be between Cameroon’s likely goalkeeper, Fabrice Ondoa, who boasts an impressive record of just one defeat in nine AFCON games (W4, D4), and Guinea’s striking sensation, Serhou Guirassy.

Guirassy’s remarkable season tally of 19 goals in 18 appearances for both club and country could pose a significant threat to Cameroon’s defense.

Cameroon’s strength lies in their ability to maintain a lead, having not lost in the last 17 competitive fixtures where they scored first (W14, D3). This statistic underscores the importance of an early lead in this game.

As the stage is set for this enthralling encounter, fans from both nations eagerly anticipate a match that could set the tone for their respective AFCON campaigns. With history, form, and pride at stake, Cameroon and Guinea are poised to deliver a memorable football spectacle.
