Over 50 critical infrastructure installations have been destroyed by the ongoing heavy rainfall in Narok County, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in Charge of Roads and Infrastructure John Gatua has said.

Gatua said among the structures destroyed is the ongoing construction of a public washroom at Ewaso Nyiro area that cost Sh3 million, a major bridge connecting Enaramatishoreki and Oletukat area and Kimelok Bridge linking Mosiro and Majimoto areas.

CECM Gatua who spoke when he toured Narok South to assess the roads and bridges in the area said the county government had put plans in place to renovate the roads before the onset of the rains.

“The county government in collaboration with relevant authorities is diligently conducting assessments to determine the extent of the impact caused by the heavy rains,” he said.

He said proactive interventions like unclogging drainages and de-silting dams carried out by the county government have spared Narok town from flooding despite the heavy downpour.

Narok County government project implementation director Jacob Sairowua called on the residents to be calm as swift measures are being implemented to reinforce and enhance the affected structures.

He refuted claims by the County Senator Ledama Ole Kina that the county had failed to deliver development projects as promised.

Sairowua said the destruction of the critical infrastructure was not anyone’s fault but was caused by the heavy downpour that is currently being experienced in the area.

A report from the county government advised residents to remain vigilant and stay informed by regularly monitoring local news and official weather updates.

They were also advised to avoid crossing swollen rivers, move to higher grounds and avoid sheltering under trees during this season to minimize casualties.

“The county government is continually conducting surveillance and issuing alerts on the potential hazards as mapped out in its Elnino preparedness, mitigation, and response plan,” read the report.

A report from the Narok Meteorological Department showed that moderate rains are expected over several areas showing a medium risk of flooding and advised the members of the public to be vigilant and to avoid crossing through flooded areas.
