On Friday, January 19, a 36-year-old Kenyan woman was arrested in India on allegations of smuggling cocaine into the country. Authorities apprehended her at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Monday, January 15, where she was reportedly found in possession of cocaine valued at Ksh506 million (Rs 26 crores).
According to a report from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), the woman, traveling on a tourist visa, had flown from Nairobi to New Delhi. Customs officials became suspicious due to her behavior during inspection, leading them to question her further. Upon closer examination, they discovered a false bottom in her bag, revealing a concealed compartment.
Inside the compartment, officials found a white powder weighing 2.5kg, subsequently confirmed to be cocaine through testing. The woman was taken into custody, and authorities initiated further investigations, suspecting her involvement in an international drug ring.
“The accused was sourcing the drugs from her contact within the country and was working as a mule trying to hand over the consignment,” stated DRI officials.
The ongoing investigations aim to determine the source of the drugs and identify her contacts. Once the inquiry is concluded, the Kenyan national will face charges under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act of 1985.
