Former Panama striker Luis ‘Matador’ Tejada, who played a pivotal role in helping the national team secure its historic qualification for the 2018 World Cup, has tragically passed away at the age of 41.
The Panamanian Football Federation (FEPAFUT) announced his death on Sunday, expressing deep condolences to his family and the entire football community in Panama.
Luis Tejada, known as “Matador,” holds the distinction of being Panama’s all-time leading goal scorer, with 43 international goals. His contributions to the national team were instrumental in their journey to qualify for the World Cup in 2018, marking Panama’s inaugural appearance in the prestigious tournament.
Local reports indicate that Tejada collapsed while participating in a local recreational league. It is reported that he suffered a heart attack soon after requesting to be substituted during a veterans’ football match. Despite swift efforts to transport him to the hospital, medics were unable to save him.
