A group of construction workers from Nairobi staged a peaceful demonstration outside the Milimani Law Courts, expressing their strong support for the Affordable Housing Project.

In a video uploaded online, the demonstrators, comprised mainly of youths, gathered on January 30, 2024, emphasizing that their livelihoods are dependent on construction work.

Protesters rallied against a recent Court of Appeal ruling that deemed the housing levy unconstitutional, voicing their disappointment and describing it as a setback to their aspirations.

A banner displayed during the demonstration conveyed a clear message: “Affordable Housing is not just a program. It is a lifeline for a better quality of life. We support the housing levy.”

In the video, law enforcement officers were seen attempting to manage the crowd as demonstrators insisted on being heard and advocated for the continuation of the Affordable Housing Project.

This demonstration occurred in the aftermath of the Court of Appeal’s decision to uphold the High Court’s orders suspending the Housing levy. The ruling, delivered by a three-judge bench on January 26, 2024, affirmed that the deductions would remain on hold.
