Moigoiywet Primary School in Trans Nzoia County has been indefinitely shut down after the lifeless body of a Grade 6 student who went missing last year was discovered by pupils who had resumed school on Monday, January 08.
According to police reports, the body was discovered stuffed inside a classroom ceiling.
As per local accounts, the student went missing last November, right after completing her Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) examinations.
Upon returning to school on Monday, the pupils detected an unpleasant odor in the classroom. The curious pupils then unfortunately discovered the decomposed body.
The Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) students promptly reported the grim discovery to their teacher, who then involved the head teacher and other members of the school management.
Douglas Amadi, the headteacher, confirmed the incident. He added that the the school management will be consulting the school’s sponsor and the Ministry of Education county office for further guidance.
“Yes, we have indeed closed the school until Monday next week following stakeholder’s consultations that resolved to close the school to pave the way for investigations,” he remarked.
According to Amadi, the child’s parents had not reported her missing to the police, despite being aware of her disappearance.
In response to the traumatic incident, the school management has arranged counseling sessions for the pupils before setting up a new date to reopen the institution.
Local police officers have now initiated investigations into the matter to uncover the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
“Our officers have launched investigations and are piecing together vital information to determine what exactly led to the death of the pupil, and we shall leave no stone unturned,” Kiminini Sub County Police Commander John Onditi stated.
The deceased student’s body was taken to Kitale County Referral Hospital pending an autopsy. Meanwhile, the family has been granted permission to make preparations for her burial.
