A 71-year-old woman in the United States, Bertha Yalter from Florida, faces accusations of attempting to kill her husband in response to him receiving a postcard from a woman he had dated 60 years ago.
The incident led to Yalter’s arrest after a call was made to the North Miami Beach Police Department by the husband, reporting that his wife had assaulted him.
Upon arriving at the scene, the police found the man in an “extremely fragile” state, displaying severe bruises, open lacerations, and bleeding bite marks.
The couple had been married for nearly 52 years at the time of the incident. According to the husband’s account, the attack occurred after he received a postcard from a woman he had dated in the 1960s before marrying Yalter.
Enraged by the postcard, Yalter allegedly attempted to smother him with a pillow.
Investigators discovered footage of at least part of the attack captured on a cellular phone, supporting the husband’s description of the events. Prosecutors revealed that Yalter admitted to confiscating her husband’s cell phone during the assault in interviews with law enforcement.
However, Yalter’s attorney refuted the assault claims, emphasizing the couple’s 51-year marriage. The attorney argued that the police overcharged the case, asserting that the husband stated he was perfectly fine and regretted the argument.
The attorney also claimed that the husband was taken to the hospital by the police insistence. Yalter faces charges of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery against an elderly person, and tampering with a witness or victim. She has been ordered to have no contact with her husband.
