Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) leader Francis Atwoli has thrown his weight behind Azimio leader Raila Odinga for the African Union Commission chairperson position.
Atwoli urged the Kenyan government to spearhead an intensive campaign across the continent to ensure Raila secures the prestigious role.
“Raila Odinga has been tried and tested, understanding the intricate social, political, and economic dynamics across the continent,” Atwoli said.
Expressing optimism in Raila’s potential, Atwoli emphasized the need for robust support from the government to secure the position.
“I hope Raila Odinga will excel in the role, and we commend the government for nominating him as a candidate. We urge the government to go all out to secure his victory,” he added.
While acknowledging Raila’s capabilities and broad appeal, Atwoli thanked President William Ruto for enabling Raila to declare his candidacy for the continental role.
“Without government support, Raila’s candidacy wouldn’t have been possible. Raila’s leadership will ensure stability and progress for Africa,” Atwoli affirmed.
Highlighting Raila’s extensive experience and skills, Atwoli underscored the importance of addressing pressing continental challenges under his leadership.
“Raila will play a vital role in resolving conflicts, including those in the DRC, Somalia, Ethiopia, and South Sudan,” Atwoli asserted.
Assuring Raila of unwavering support, Atwoli expressed confidence in his ability to lead Africa to greater heights.
Raila, in a press conference attended by AU Special Envoy Olusegun Obasanjo, formally declared his readiness to serve as the African Union Commission chairperson, following speculations of support from President William Ruto.
