Kenya and Toyota Tsusho Corporation of Japan have formalized a collaboration framework agreement aimed at advancing sustainable development and green energy initiatives.

President William Ruto witnessed the signing of the agreement, which involved Cabinet Secretaries Davis Chirchir (Energy), Kipchumba Murkomen (Transport), and Rebecca Miano (Trade) at the Toyota Tsusho Corporation Headquarters in Japan.

According to State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, the agreement encompasses a broad range of ventures designed to enhance Kenya’s green energy landscape.

A key aspect of the deal involves investments in crucial projects within the green energy value chain, including the Meru Wind Power Project, Menengai Geothermal, and Isiolo Solar Power Projects, which are set to receive substantial support.

The collaboration also aims to promote the adoption of electrified vehicles, with a specific emphasis on Hydrogen Electric Vehicles (HEVs). This initiative reflects the commitment of both parties to reduce carbon emissions and encourage sustainable transportation solutions.

Beyond environmental initiatives, the agreement highlights efforts to strengthen Kenya’s automotive sector. By boosting the car assembly industry, the partnership seeks to stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities within the country.

President Ruto’s visit to Japan is part of a State visit expected to enhance and rejuvenate bilateral relations between Kenya and Japan. This visit follows Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s state visit to Kenya in May 2023 and commemorates the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
