TV47 has broken into the list of the four most watched TV stations in Kenya, according to a newly released report by Infotrak.
Despite being a relatively new entrant since its launch in 2019, TV47 has emerged as the youngest TV outlet to break into the top five, trailing behind Citizen TV, NTV, and KTN, in that order.
Citizen TV maintains its dominant position in the market, with 90% of respondents confirming regular viewership, followed by NTV at 61%, KTN Home at 52%, TV47 at 32%, and KBC also at 32%.
K24 TV stands at a distant sixth with 22%, while KTN News follows closely with 18%. The rankings further reveal Inooro TV as the leading vernacular station, securing the eighth position, followed by Ramogi and Kiss TV.
In the radio category, Radio Citizen maintains its lead with a 26% market share, followed by Radio Jambo at 24%, and Radio 47 at 20%. Radio Maisha secures the fourth position, with Milele FM and Classic 105 following in fifth and sixth positions, respectively.
A separate report from the Communications Authority of Kenya reveals a decline in radio audiences since 2014, while TV audiences remain consistent. The period between 2015 and 2022 witnessed a growth in the number of radio stations from 120 to 228, TV stations from 6 to 182, and newspapers from 9 to 13.
In 2014, 92% of the Kenyan population consumed radio content, which decreased to 77% in 2023. TV consumption, on the other hand, increased from 46% to 74%, while digital news channels saw an uptick from 27% to 57%. Newspapers continue to lag, experiencing a drop from 21% to 7%.
According to the CA’s data, TV stations consistently garnered the largest share of advertising revenues, surpassing radio and newspapers.
Since January 2023, TV stations have consistently received over Ksh3 billion in monthly advertising revenue, while radio received between Ksh1.4 billion and Ksh1.8 billion. Newspapers, in comparison, received advertising revenue ranging between Ksh450 million and Ksh700 million.
