Following the tumultuous aftermath of his notable Oscar altercation in 2022 where he slapped comedian Chris Rock live on stage, Will Smith is gearing for a major comeback to the big screens cinematic stage.
According to reports by Variety, the 55-year-old actor is slated to assume the leading role in the action-packed film “Sugar Bandits.”
Based on Chuck Hogan’s 2010 novel “Devils in Exile,” Smith will embody the character of Neal Maven, an Iraq War veteran collaborating with fellow military comrades to dismantle the drug trade in Boston.
Chuck Hogan himself will craft the screenplay for “Sugar Bandits,” adding to the anticipation surrounding the project.
This venture marks Smith’s significant return to film since his 2022 production “Emancipation,” which he co-produced alongside Antoine Fuqua.
Smith’s comeback announcement follows a period of introspection and contrition following his widely publicized altercation at the 2022 Academy Awards, where he famously slapped comedian Chris Rock onstage.
Despite expressing remorse on numerous occasions for his actions, the incident led to Smith’s resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, along with a subsequent 10-year prohibition from the Oscars.
