Nairobi City County’s Mbagathi Level 5 Hospital has marked a significant medical breakthrough by successfully performing its first-ever brain surgery, led by neurosurgeon Dr. Tom Mboya.
The patient, Jessy Mubaiya, 57, had been grappling with chronic subdural hematoma since sustaining a head injury in 1995. Additionally, Mubaiya was diagnosed with Renal Tubular Acidosis (RTA) between 1996 and 1997, a condition caused by the kidneys’ inability to appropriately acidify urine.
After enduring persistent headaches and unsuccessful medical consultations across various health facilities, Mubaiya sought treatment at Mbagathi Hospital on February 12, 2024. Following examinations aided by the hospital’s new CT scan, he underwent a craniotomy surgery lasting approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes.
Speaking on this milestone, Mbagathi Hospital CEO, Mr. Alexander Irungu, highlighted the hospital’s commitment to advancing medical care, expressing optimism that the newly installed CT scan and Critical Care Unit (CCU) would enable the hospital to tackle even more complex cases.
This achievement comes shortly after Mbagathi Hospital made history with its first cementless hip surgery, adding to the hospital’s growing list of medical breakthroughs. Cementless hip surgery, a procedure that replaces a damaged hip joint with an artificial implant without using cement, further solidifies Mbagathi Hospital’s reputation as a center of excellence in healthcare.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja affirmed the county’s dedication to enhancing healthcare services, announcing plans to equip Mbagathi Hospital with an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This development aims to alleviate congestion at Kenyatta National Hospital by providing critical care services at Mbagathi Hospital, complementing the existing ICU facility at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.
