Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa finds himself facing a long weekend behind bars following his apprehension on allegations of extortion aimed at Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa.

Echesa, presently held at Muthaiga Police Station since his arrest on Thursday afternoon, anticipates a court appearance on Tuesday after his bond application was declined by the authorities.

His legal representative, Danstan Omari, affirmed that Echesa’s custody revolves around accusations of extortion, cybercrime bullying, and orchestrating an abduction.

The ex-CS underwent questioning at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) along Kiambu Road, enduring hours of interrogation.

Authorities revealed Echesa had been avoiding arrest, hindering attempts to probe him regarding the allegations and potential legal action.

“All these claims do not specify the amount of money he allegedly received or from whom, there is no complainant in this case,” stated lawyer Omari.

“Some speculations suggest he was the initial accuser, yet now he stands accused. Even though it’s Easter, tomorrow we will file an application to have him released pending his court appearance.”
