Nottingham Forest has been penalized with a four-point deduction for violating the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations. As a result, they have slipped into the relegation zone.
Today’s decision has propelled Luton to 17th place, positioning them to avoid relegation, particularly after their late equalizer secured a 1-1 draw against Forest on Saturday.
Although Forest acknowledged their breach of the regulations, they argued that the delayed sale of Brennan Johnson to Tottenham should be considered as a mitigating factor. They claimed to have rejected an offer from Brentford for Johnson before the June 30 deadline for filing accounts, anticipating a higher payment from Spurs later in the summer.
However, the independent panel rejected this defense, resulting in Forest’s descent into the bottom three of the league standings.
Forest have now joined Everton as the other club to have had points docked.
