Kenya’s Investment, Trade & Industry Cabinet Secretary, Rebecca Miano, recently inaugurated the Electric Bus production line at the Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers plant in Thika. This milestone marks the country’s first dedicated assembly line for contemporary Electric Buses.
BasiGo, a pioneering company in the electric vehicle sector, achieved a significant breakthrough in February 2024 with the completion of assembly for two E9 Kubwa buses. These buses, tailored specifically for the Kenyan PSV (Public Service Vehicle) market, signify a significant step forward in modernizing public transportation in Kenya.
The introduction of these 9-meter electric buses aligns with the government’s commitment to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By transitioning to electric vehicles, Kenya aims to mitigate environmental degradation and address the adverse impacts of climate change, particularly in the transportation sector.
During the inauguration ceremony, CS Rebecca Miano emphasized the importance of embracing sustainable solutions in the transportation sector. She highlighted the significant role that electric vehicles can play in reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental sustainability.
The two E9 Kubwa buses assembled by BasiGo will soon enter operation with Citi Hoppa and Super Metro, two prominent players in Kenya’s public transportation industry. This deployment marks the beginning of a broader electrification effort aimed at modernizing the country’s public transport fleet.
Jit Bhattacharya, CEO and Co-Founder of BasiGo, expressed gratitude to the government for its support in advancing the electrification of public transport in Kenya. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in driving innovation and sustainable development in the transportation industry.
