Former Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria is set to face the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday at 8 a.m. for questioning regarding ongoing fraud investigations.
Initially summoned for Tuesday’s appearance, Wa Iria’s legal representatives appeared instead, requesting a one-day postponement for his appearance.
EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi, in a statement to the press on Tuesday, confirmed the commission’s receipt and acceptance of Wa Iria’s request.
“Former Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria has responded to the commission’s Order to appear by sending their advocates to request for rescheduling of his appearance from Tuesday, April 16, 2024, to Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at 8 a.m. The Commission has considered and accepted the request,” Mr. Ngumbi stated.
Wa Iria is one of eight individuals slated to face charges by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) concerning alleged procurement fraud amounting to Ksh.140 million between 2015 and 2016 within the Murang’a County government.
In a statement released on Saturday, the DPP outlined that the suspects are accused of irregularly awarding tenders and engaging in procurement malpractices, resulting in the aforementioned sum.
Investigations conducted by EACC revealed that the suspects allegedly awarded tenders to Top Image Media Consultancy Limited and Value View Limited, disregarding conflicts of interest.
The other individuals implicated in the case include Patrick Kagumu Mukuria, Jane Wanjiru Mbuthia, David Maina Kiama, David Mamma Njeri, Jane Waigwe Kimani, Solomon Mutura Kimani, and Peter Muturi Karanja.
