Four Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers will spend Wednesday night in a police cell in Lodwar, Turkana County, after an attempt by their colleagues to rescue them from arrest failed.
The four had beaten up a police officer at a road block within Lodwar town before disarming him in dramatic fashion.
According to the police, the KDF officers were travelling in a water bowser when they were delayed at a police roadblock near Turkana University.
Angered by the delay, soldiers drew their guns and fired in the air before proceeding to beat up the police officer.
They then disarmed him and instructed him to pick up his gun from the Lenturerei Military Camp on the other side of town.
The gunshots were however heard by police officers from a nearby police station who rushed to the scene and fired in the air to subdue the military officers.
The four KDF soldiers were then disarmed and taken to the Turkana Police Station.
However, a few minutes later, a contingent of about 10 soldiers arrived at the police station in an attempt to rescue their colleagues.
It took the intervention of Turkana Sub County Police Commander Samuel Boit to calm, the situation.
The four KDF soldiers will be handed over to the Military Police to handle the matter since they cannot be disciplined by civilians.
