Detectives are on the hunt for a gang responsible for shooting and killing a man delivering Sh420,000 to a construction site in Rabai, Kilifi County. The incident also left the driver’s employer injured and currently recovering in the hospital.
The violent encounter occurred on Saturday afternoon, as the two victims were on their way to pay workers at a construction site in the Kokotoni area, where General Mills is constructing a structure. George Omondi, the driver, and his boss had just withdrawn the money from a Mariakani bank when they were ambushed by two armed robbers outside the site gate around noon.
According to police reports, Omondi was shot three times in the chest and died on the spot. His boss was shot in both legs and hands and was initially treated at Mariakani sub-county hospital before being transferred to Pandya Hospital in Mombasa for surgery. He is now in stable condition.
Witnesses reported that the suspects fled the scene on a waiting motorcycle. The attack left other workers, who were awaiting their pay, in shock and mourning the loss of their colleague.
Police recovered a 9mm spent cartridge from the scene and suspect the robbery may have been an inside job. Efforts to apprehend the gang are ongoing, with a special squad dispatched to assist in the investigation.
This incident is part of a troubling rise in armed robberies, prompting calls for authorities to take action. Police advise that victims confronted by robbers should cooperate to ensure their safety.
In another incident, police in Yatta, Machakos County, are investigating the murder of a man whose body was found in a river near Kiaoni market. The body, discovered naked with a black T-shirt around the chest, had visible facial injuries and blood stains. The body has been moved to a local mortuary as the investigation continues.
