Vice Chief of Defence Forces (VCDF) Lt Gen Charles Muriu Kahariri has been promoted to the rank of general and appointed as the Chief of Defence Forces, succeeding Gen Francis Ogolla who tragically died in a chopper crash.
With this promotion, Kahariri becomes a four-star general, the highest rank in Kenya’s defence forces, while the five-star general rank remains exclusive to the President of the Republic of Kenya.
In a related move, Kenya Airforce commander Maj Gen John Omenda has been promoted and appointed as the new VCDF.
President William Ruto, as the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, made these appointments following a meeting of the Defense Council chaired by Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.
Kahariri’s elevation to the role of Chief of Defence Forces came somewhat unexpectedly. Traditionally, military commanders have often served as service commanders, a position Kahariri had not held. Although he had served as the deputy commander of the Kenya Navy, he later moved to a defence college. However, despite this deviation from the norm, Kahariri’s promotion signifies a significant milestone in his military career.
Becoming a general in any military is considered the pinnacle of one’s career in the armed forces, representing the top of the pyramid. Statistics from military academies worldwide confirm that only about one percent of a cadet class typically reach the rank of general, making it a highly prestigious achievement in the profession of arms.
