Two brothers have died following following a disagreement over how to share meat at a funeral of their relative in Papaa village, Teso North.
James Ocharo allegedly killed his younger brother, Gracio Ogulo during a fight after they failed to disagree on who will eat the liver of a cow that had been slaughtered for the event.
It is said that Ocharo stabbed Ogulo and then fled the scene.
A search operation was launched by enraged villagers, who scoured a nearby sugarcane plantation in pursuit of the suspect. Their efforts culminated in locating Mr. Ocharo on Monday night, whereupon they apprehended him and administered mob justice, resulting in his death.
Busia County Police Commander Ahmed Abdille condemned the vigilante action, stressing that the community should have reported the incident to the authorities.
“It was wrong for the community to lynch the suspect. They should have reported the matter to the police for appropriate action. We are investigating the matter and hope to arrest those involved in the killing,” said Mr Abdille.
