The Council of Governors (CoG) has given Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi a 14-day deadline to release the full county budget allocation, warning that they will shut down county operations if their demands are not met.
The ultimatum was delivered on Friday, March 22, by CoG Chair and Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, as tensions escalate over the ongoing dispute between the national and county governments regarding budget allocations.
“We, as governors, issue a 14-day ultimatum to the government, failing which county governments will shut down,” Waiguru declared.
Counties Set to Receive Less Than Agreed Allocation
At the heart of the standoff is the revelation that counties are set to receive less than the agreed amount of over Ksh 400 billion, a move that has sparked outrage among governors.
The county bosses have strongly opposed the proposed allocation, arguing that reducing the funds will cripple essential services, including healthcare, infrastructure, and development projects.
With the deadline now in place, all eyes are on the Treasury to see whether the government will address the governors’ concerns or risk a total shutdown of county operations.
